When Brazilian seafood supplier Nativ Pescados launched in 2007, the plan was to export most of its products, but the changing tide of seafood consumption in Brazil at the time quickly altered those plans.
"We saw that the market was turning, and the domestic market was growing, so we changed the strategy," Marcelo Eiger, research and development manager for Nativ, told IntraFish.
Now, as then, 95 percent of the company's products are sold domestically.
Meanwhile, seafood consumption in Brazil has rocketed from 7 kilos per capita in 2007 to 10 kilos in 2011.
