The Alaska Pollock Fishing Association, a group of far eastern Russian fisherman, represents more than 70 percent of those who fish for pollock in Russian waters. The group is seeking to pass MSC’s environmental certification test, earning the distinctive blue eco-label for its products.
It’s an unprecedented move, and if approved, would be Russia’s first such seafood eco-label.
The competition over pollock – the world’s most important whitefish – is fierce. On the U.S. side, the Alaskan pollock fishery is the largest ever to earn the MSC eco-label.
