The fall in the Alaska pollock quota is a contributing factor in the stronger demand for saithe blocks as a replacement product, said Simon Jacobsen, sales manager of the Faroe Islands-based United Seafood.
“It’s an advantage having saithe as our main species. Prices increased in 2008 and have still not fallen. Saithe has stayed stable and demand is growing,” Jacobsen told IntraFish.
Norwegian fishing giant Aker Seafoods is seeing an increased interest in saithe blocks.
There is an increased demand for economically-priced seafood and “saithe is a good, cheap fish,” the company’s Morten Jensen told IntraFish.
