The battle between Alaska’s salmon producers and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) gets hotter by the minute.

On Tuesday, two weeks after Alaska salmon producers announced they were pulling out of the MSC eco-label program, the first significant buyer -- Japan’s Aeon supermarket chain -- said it would go searching elsewhere for its wild salmon.

n a statement from Aeon that was delivered to my office via an email from the MSC, Japan’s largest retailer said it committed to sourcing from MSC products in 2006, and it does not plan to change.
