Despite a four-day delay due to the United States government partial shutdown, Alaska crabbers have caught 14 percent of the season’s Total Allowable Catch (TAC) in the week they've been at sea, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
As of Friday afternoon, 1.2 million pounds of the 8.6 million TAC had landed with processors and sellers working rapidly to take advantage of the Japanese market, which buys 50 to 65 percent of the TAC annually.
Earlier this week, the price-per-pound being sold to Japan was set at $13.50
