Norway completely dominated the Portuguese salmon market last year with a 95 percent market share of the 7,000 metric tons imported, according to the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC).

Imports have grown almost 30 percent for two years, and in 2009 the total is predicted to soar by a similar amount.

"Salmon is a [relatively] new product; it came to Portugal 15 years ago, and really started growing in 2002-2003,” Oyvind Jensen, NSEC's Portugese representative, told IntraFish.

“The Portuguese are very big seafood consumers, eating 60 kilos per capita per year, which is the same as Japan.
