The product, on sale at a Seattle-area Walmart recently, offers a message consumers might find confusing as it pertains to fresh salmon: "Processed in the USA. Partially produced with genetic engineering."

The label is designed to make the product compliant with a new GMO labeling law that went into effect in Vermont on July 1, Walmart confirmed to IntraFish.

The labeling applies to the "non-fish" parts of the "Fresh Atlantic Salmon Lemon Pepper Cedar Plank" item, such as the seasoning, that could potentially have GMO ingredients, Walmart said.

Walmart is requiring such labeling on any products possibly contain GMO ingredients regardless of which markets they are sold in.

The
