“I think it’s terrible,” said Bill Martin, referring to the damning report that exposes loopholes in the way the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspects seafood imports. Martin is the president of Blue Ridge Aquaculture, the world’s largest producer of tilapia using indoor recirculating aquaculture systems.

“We have a disaster in the making here in how we check seafood,” Martin told IntraFish. “The U.S. imports 80 percent to 85 percent of its seafood and less than 2 percent of that are inspected in any fashion, whether it is a spot inspection, inspecting the carton, actually tasting the flesh of the fish.”
