Norway-based producer Mowi says the decision to phase out salmon farming in a key British Columbia area will result in the loss of 2.6 million fish, another consequence of what it views as a hasty, one-sided decision.

Last month, Mowi, along with Grieg Seafood and Mitsubishi-owned Cermaq Group, applied to the Federal Court of Canada in Vancouver for a judicial review of a federal mandate for the three companies to end operations in the Discovery Islands area by 2022.

The decision was made quickly, with Canadian Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan announcing her intention to consult with First Nations in September.
