The Ecuadorian shrimp industry has been buoyed by a recovery of sales to Asia but some producers may face a fight to survive in the face of the damage to the local economy brought on by coronavirus health crisis.
Optimism has returned after a 27 percent increase in exports to Asia in April following a 2 percent dip in March.
During a particularly tough three-week period in March and April, when key markets in Europe and North America followed China and other Asian nations into lockdown, Ecuadorian shrimp plants ran at 30-40 percent as processors cut capacity to prevent the coronavirus contagion.
