Though sea lice infestation and its economic cost on the global farmed salmon industry is well-known, and piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) has garnered significant limelight in British Columbia in the recent past, there is another parasite that is eating into salmon producers' profits, and as IntraFish finds, the costs are significant.
Mowi's 2017 annual report states that the company received 10,046 quality claims that year, and around 50 percent of the claims were linked to the effects of the parasite Kudoa thyrsites in salmon of Canadian origin.
