Cell-based aquaculture production costs are falling rapidly, but investors will have to play a long, patient game before they start to see meaningful return on capital, according to panelists at the IntraFish Seafood Investor Forum in New York last month.

When Wildtype Chief Growth Officer Ben Friedman joined the company two and and a half years ago, production costs for the group's cellular salmon ran to around $200,000 (€187,000) per pound.

Today, they are in the region of $200 (€187) per pound, he said, showing just how quickly the technology is closing the gap between science fiction and reality.
