Dramatic shifts in consumer behavior mean the seafood industry should prepare itself to face a broad range of scrutiny on animal welfare, plastics and perhaps most notably, carbon emissions, according to a top executive with Swedish furniture and foodservice giant IKEA.

The company is already changing its food offerings to meet these new demands, starting with its iconic Swedish meatballs, launching a plant-based version earlier this year.

While the company has not yet launched plant-based alternatives for any of its 23 seafood items, IKEA Food Sustainability Advisor Christoph Mathiesen said the writing may be on the wall.
