When I joined IFFO and the marine ingredients sector in 2011, I thought I knew most of the fish industry, but I was keen to learn more about this particular part of the wonderful world of fish.

After 30 years in fish for direct human consumption (Mallison worked for UK retailer Marks & Spencer and the Marine Stewardship Council before joining IFFO), there were certainly new faces and companies involved in this rather low profile but global business, where small bony fish that have little or no direct market are converted into useful proteins (fishmeal), Omega 3 rich oils and other food and feed ingredients.
