Berhard Friess, director at the European Commission, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), pledged the union's continuous support for developing a German aquaculture sector.

The EU has pledged to support the country's fish farming industry development with around €64 million for the period of between 2014 and 2020.

However, "financial support is only one part, the other one is bureaucracy," Friess told IntraFish at an event at the Grüne Woche in Berlin.

It is the role of the EU to cut red tape, to share knowledge and "experiences" between member states, and to create the "basic parameters" for the creation of a flourishing single market for aquaculture products, he said.
