Auction prices for fish in Spain have fallen between 30 percent and 50 percent the past 12 months, said Juan Carlos Corras Arias, president of PescaGalicia-Arpega-Obarco, an organization that represents 62 Spanish and foreign-flagged ships.

“We are being massacred by imports from third countries; the auction price of hake has fallen by 50 percent from €4 ($5.70) last year to just €2 ($2.80) this year. The market has been taken over by South Africa, Namibia, Senegal, Mauritania, Morrocco, Argentina, Chile and other countries,” Arias told Fishing News International.
