Suzumo’s net profit soared to ¥51 million (€323,000/$426,000), up from ¥2 million (€12,000/$17,000) the previous year, on ¥1.3 billion (€8.2 million/$11.1 million) in sales, up 18.4 percent from 2006.

“The food service industry in general is in a good shape. Although competition is becoming harsh between conveyor-belt sushi restaurants, performance is much larger than expectations and the trend will continue,” the company said.

The sushi market in Japan, though leveling off, is worth around ¥1.3 trillion (€8.2 billion/$11.1 billion). The share held by conveyor-belt sushi restaurants has grown to around a 40 percent share.
