At first glance, Bowens Island Restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina, is not a marketer’s dream: It’s isolated — about 10 miles, a bridge and a bumpy road away from the heart of the city —  it’s only open for dinner and the restaurant’s marketing budget is a whopping $0.

But the large, wood-paneled house, adjacent to one of the many snaking bodies of water around Charleston is generally bustling with customers, starting right at its opening time of 5pm. It has many regulars, some that come weekly, according to General Manager Eric Hudzinski.
