With ever-increasing pressure being placed on retailers to source its seafood from responsible, well-managed fisheries and farms, UK retailer Waitrose is keeping focused on leading the pack on sustainability.

The retailer, which boasts some 350 stores across the country, has a commitment to sustainable seafood stretching back nearly two decades, and in fact was a pioneer of the very concept of selling sustainable seafood in supermarkets, Jeremy Ryland-Langley, aquaculture and fisheries manager at Waitrose, told IntraFish.

To cite one recent example, this May the retailer became the first supermarket to set a deadline to ensure all branded canned tuna it sells will be sourced using more sustainable fishing methods by the end of 2017.
