UK retail prices must rocket by 50% in order to save fishing fleet

THE RETAIL price of fish in the United Kingdom will need to rise by as much as 50% in some cases to keep the UK fishing fleet financially solvent in the face of rising fuel prices, according to a new Seafish estimate, writes Karl-Erik Stromsta.

The sting of rising fuel costs varies depending on the type of vessel and gear utilised, but if current trends continue the retail price of seafood caught in UK waters will need to increase between 7% and 50% over the next 12 to 18 months.
