In recent forums we have participated in we have been emphasizing the retail perspective of the seafood business with regard to sustainability, labor transparency, and food safety. The industry players have not made life easy for the retailer: opaque supply chains, adulterated product, labeling fraud, illegal fishing, and trafficked labor are real issues in the industry that to a greater or lesser degree are being addressed but that persist.
The NGO community, seeking to affect more rapid change in these situations, is targeting retailers to force their suppliers to improve their track records.
