Earlier this week, international restaurant franchise Subway joined the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) as the 40th member.
Greenpeace Oceans Campaigner David Pinsky applauded Subway saying, "as global companies like Walmart continue selling the most destructively caught tuna available, it is reassuring that Subway, one of the world’s largest tuna buyers, is working to source its tuna responsibly."
Skipjack tuna is the only seafood sandwich the menu at Subway, which has 44,600 outlets in 112 countries.
"If Subway is willing to invest in smaller-scale pole and line tuna fisheries, so too can major retail giants like Walmart and foodservice behemoths like Sysco," said Pinsky.
