Global production of coldwater prawns (Pandalus borealis) reached a record level of 324,000t in 1999 and is expected to increase further in 2000 to 350,000t reports Eric Edwards.
This growth is due to the explosive expansion in Canada's new shrimp fishery, as landings in the Nordic countries have fallen.
Delegates at the Third Coldwater Prawn Forum, held in Edinburgh, Scotland in the summer, heard that there had been a significant reduction in the prawn catch of the Icelandic fleet.
Today, the two major Nordic producers are Norway and Greenland, which together account for 43% of the world's catch of coldwater prawns.
