Expalsa, one of Ecuador's major shrimp exporters, is launching organic shrimp under the Organic Wonder brand. The move comes after year-long improvements in its laboratory, farms, feed plant and packing plant.
The German organic agricultural association, Naturland, which has developed standards for aquaculture, certified 577 hectares of shrimp farms in Ecuador as being suitable for organic production at the end of last year.
'The conversion to organic is not an option, ' says Juan Xavier Cordovez, general manager of Expalsa. 'This new challenge will show how seriously we take our investments into new product lines.
