WAITROSE has become the first supermarket in the UK to launch what is described as a revolutionary new package for shellfish.
The modified-atmosphere packaging (MAP) has been introduced by the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group.
MAP is said to deliver mussels in peak condition sealed in an atmosphere designed to match that of the seashore where they were harvested.
SSMG chief Donny Gillies says consumers would now be able to enjoy mussels that remained fresher, moister and plumper for longer.
The packaging is a lot stronger, giving greater protection to the mussels themselves, as well as ensuring an additional three to four days product life, he adds Waitrose fish buyer Jeremy Ryland Langley says the packaging 'adds another high quality product to the wide range from the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group already in our stores.
