The Hong Kong Consumer Council found excessive amounts of mercury in more than half of the region’s tuna samples, Hong Kong Free Press reported.

In April, the heavy metal methylmercury was detected in 49 out of 50 sashimi samples, of which 10 out of 19 sashimi tuna samples had an "exorbitant" amount of the toxicant.

The statuary body reported that all 19 tuna and 31 salmon samples were from local restaurants, supermarkets and takeaway outlets.
