The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has denied a years-long petition from groups, including nonprofit environmental law group Earthjustice, asking the organization to require companies to disclose seafood mercury levels at the point of sale.

The petition, originally filed in 2011, was denied, with the FDA saying it had done extensive more research and released new advice for pregnant and breastfeeding women regarding eating seafood,

"We are confident that the dissemination of the information in the 2017 advice and accompanying materials directly to the public and through voluntary placement at points-of-purchase and at the offices of health care providers will effectively communicate clear and useful federal seafood consumption advice for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, women considering becoming pregnant, and caregivers of young children," the FDA said in the statement, sent to IntraFish.
