The Mediterranean now accounts for more than half of the world's total production of 'farmed' bluefin, according to Globefish, the unit in FAO's Fisheries Department responsible for information on international fish trade.
Bluefin tuna, which has the highest oil content of all the tuna species, is considered of superior commercial value. Therefore, in order to increase its fat content, it is reared for a short period in cages and fattened to improve the oil content of the flesh to meet Japanese market standards and to reach a good commercial value.
