Retail giant Carrefour announced it is to stop selling pangasius at its hypermarkets and supermarkets in Spain, dealing yet another blow to the beleaguered sector.

The news follows that of of Carrefour Belgium last week, and of a number of Italian supermarkets, also revealed on Tuesday.

The chain said it is a preventive measure due to the "harmful environmental effects of the farming of the species".

The company confirmed to IntraFish, the decision was taken "preventively" and that is "aligned with that of other countries in the group."

The group will stop selling the fish it when it runs out of stock.
