Italian Food authorities have banned the import and sales of tuna steaks treated or 'smoked' with carbon monoxide to keep their colour. The ban took effect on May 29th.
Tuna steaks imported into Italy on or before that date could still be sold, but any consignments imported after that date, would be confiscated and destroyed, according to atuna.
EU member states, such as the Netherlands, recently accepted the import of 'clear smoke' steaks and loins, a patented carbon monoxide process.
However, several member states consider treating tuna with carbon monoxide a fraudulent act.
