It’s no secret that Americans enjoy oysters — according to the FAO, US consumers slurp down 60% of total worldwide production of the bivalve.

But with dozens of varieties, it can be hard to remember the difference between Kussi and Kumamoto and to recall which ones you prefer.

That’s where Sam Asher comes in. The New York-based entrepreneur grew up eating seafood, and after working in the finance world for years he had an idea: Why not create a phone app so you can find all the oysters at restaurants in your area — complete with varieties, prices and the ability to “favorite” the kinds you enjoy most?

After about a year of perfecting such an app, Asher is getting ready to launch Pearl next month, an app, he says hasn’t been done before, but is much-needed.
