The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) told IntraFish it is investigating San Diego, California-based seafood supplier PureFish, also known as EME Imports, after receiving a complaint related to the certification of its organic salmon.
"The investigation is ongoing," said CDPH. "Organic certification is one aspect of the investigation."
The are no organic standards for seafood in the United States, but companies can import and sell seafood certified by organic certification programs in other countries.
When asked the status of the investigation and the legitimacy of PureFish's organic certification, the CDPH said it was not able to comment on ongoing investigations.
