THE WHITBY trawler Sarah Thinnesen WY 777 sank only a mile and a half off Whitby on Thursday last week after she suddenly flooded. Her two crew abandoned the boat into a liferaft and were rescued by Whitby lifeboat.
The 24m trawler broadcast a mayday just after 05.00hrs reporting that she was taking water and that the pump was not coping. Humber Coastguard requested the launch of the Whitby lifeboat and scrambled a rescue helicopter from Leconfield.
Several vessels responded to the mayday including the ferry Prince of Scandinavia.
