Phil Lockley sees the skills of hand lining at first hand aboard the St Ives cove boat Vipa.

Half a dozen cove boats left the quayside at St Ives in Cornwall at 2pm on a baking hot summers day for another 'ebbing tide' session to catch prime Cornish mackerel by hand line.

This was real hand line fishing, using no mechanical equipment whatsoever.

The 18ft Plymouth Pilot, named Vipa and powered by a 36 year old, 10hp Saab diesel, headed west at six knots into a strong tide.
