AN AUTHORISATION from the Spanish government for longliners to target bluefin tuna of less than 30 kg. is illegal under European law, according to the environmental community, reports Tom Seaman.

The Spanish ministry of agriculture, food and fisheries is permitting longline and other hook gear vessels to target bluefin of less than 30 kg. and 115 cm and over 8 kg. or 75 cm in the Mediterranean.

Greenpeace is petitioning the European Commission (EC) for action, stating that the Spanish government is in violation of EU law, which permits only undersized catches in the Eastern Atlantic and Adriatic Sea.
