Spain is restricting its trawling fleet from operating in the Falkland Islands, Javier Garat, president of the Spanish Fisheries Federation (Cepesca) said at the general assembly of the United Nations held in New York in early August, reports La Voz de Galicia.

Until now, around 20 fishing trawlers operate every year in the islands, which are not regulated under any regional fisheries scheme due to a lack of consensus over the sovereignty of the archipelago’s waters.

At the meeting, Garat highlighted the importance of the recommendations adopted by the UN to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems (VME), but regretted that these measures are not applied in the Falklands Islands as there is no regulatory body responsible for their implementation.
