A review of the allocation of rights to the inshore trawl fishery for hake and sole began in the Cape High Court in South Africa Feb. 6, but the South African Deep-Sea Trawling Industry Association (SADSTIA) warned further fragmentation of the deep-sea trawling industry will come at the expense of beneficiation and jobs.

The outcome of the review will have "profound implications" for the deep-sea trawling industry which faces a similar allocation of long-term rights in three years time, said SADSTIA.
