THE CREW of a Shetland whitefish trawler is trying to buck the downward trend in the industry by diversifying into processing and retailing their own fish, reports Hans J Marter.
David Robertson, James John Shearer, Ellis Johnson and Bobby Shearer of Mizpah LK173 have just opened their own processing unit with attached shop in Scalloway.
They hope the move will enable them to survive in a climate of drastic fishing limitations, poor prices and accumulating debts.
