THE SEAFISH Skippers Ticket is awarded to fishermen who successfully complete National or Scottish Vocational Qualifications in Fishing Vessel Operations at Level 3 (Inshore Area).
This is the appropriate qualification for the skipper of an inshore fishing vessel and comprises units on navigation, safety, engineering and fishing operations.
Since there is (currently) no mandatory requirement for this qualification, Seafish agreed to issue its own 'ticket' to fishermen who successfully complete this qualification in recognition of their competence.
It was the Shetland Fisheries Training Association that secured funding through the European Social Fund for Objective 1 Areas to develop a system for delivering this qualification throughout the Highlands and Islands using port based training rooms, assessors and tutors.
