A NEW 'parachute' stern trap fishing method and the introduction of factory ships is breathing new life into the Pacific fishery for saury (Cololabis saira). This fishery has been unusual in that much of the TACs of up to 450,000 tonnes have remained unharvested.

Now, a co-operative effort by researchers, fishing companies and suppliers is advancing the fishery.

FOURTEEN ships have been converted to join the Pacific Ocean saury fishery - including five STR-class factory trawlers owned by Dalmoreprodukt (DMP) - following new thinking being applied to boost catches.
