A HARTLEPOOL man has patented a new type of shellfish pot that contains separate compartments to keep crabs/lobsters, prawns apart from each other.

The thinking behind the concept is that because crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters do not like to enter areas where they perceive there are already other shellfish in close proximity, the provision of separate compartments or 'bolt holes' will conceal shellfish already in a pot and encourage more to enter.

Phil Berriman, the designer of the new pot told FN: "Traditionally made pots/creels all have a restricted capacity, as do steel pots.
