One of the options being investigated as a way to reduce fuel costs apart from the use of bio fuels, re-engining or improving the efficiency of fishing gear is switching to the relatively cheaper heavy fuel oils (HFOs) that are commonly used by the shipping industry.
It is an option that has already been taken up by the new Dutch beam trawler Catharina (KW 145), which is reported to be enjoying the benefits of reduced operating costs.
But is using this type of fuel a viable alternative for the UK fishing industry?
