SQUID fishing in South Africa has developed rapidly over the past two decades as demand for high quality line-caught squid has grown in Europe.

Sturdy deck boats ranging from 12 to 20 metres and carrying powerful lights and freezing facilities have replaced the small (6 metre) highly mobile ski-boats that once operated in this fishery.

An important factor in this growth has been the development of a small and privately-owned fishing port close to the squid grounds. This is Port St Francis, near to the mouth of the Kromme River at the southern-most boundary of South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province.
