The bulk of brown crab landed by Nórønya each week at Stromness is destined for the live market in Europe transported by Spanish and Portuguese vivier trucks.

But the Orkney Fishermen’s Society (OFS) state-of-the-art crab processing factory at Stromness complements the live trade and helps to balance out any overspill in supply.

Managed by Stewart Crichton, the OFS crab factory, which is the biggest single employer in Stromness, has gone from strength to strength since being built in 1996 to become firmly established as the biggest producer of crab meat in the UK and one of the largest in Europe.
