The number of fishermen recorded in Norway increased by 1 percent last year, according to the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries. The country's fishing fleet grew 1.3 percent at the same time.
At the close of 2016 there were 11,244 fishermen and fisherwomen and 5,959 fishing vessels registered in Norway -- an increase welcomed by Kjell Ingebrigtsen, chairman of the Norwegian Fishermen’s Association (NFA).
“It’s pleasing to see positive growth for numbers of fishermen, age distribution and percentage of women,” he told IntraFish sister publication Fiskeribladet Fiskaren.
