Golden Ray is the second boat of that name to be skippered by Darren McClements.

The first was the 69ft Golden Ray FR 346, which he fished from 1998 until the boat was decommissioned in 2004. She was built by George Thomson & Sons of Buckie in 1966 as the 69ft seine netter Illustrious BF 438 for Willie Hay of Portsoy.

Powered by a 200hp Gardner engine, Illustrious moved to Fraserburgh in 1984 where the seiner was renamed Chrisannryl FR 346 by new skipper Ian Duthie.
