It's no secret that Alaska's floundering budget is hitting the seafood industry, from processors to marketing groups. A new group is hoping to step in and help the state's salmon industry continue to thrive despite those cuts.

Alaska-based non-profit initiative SalmonState was founded a year or so ago by former Trout Unlimited executive Tim Bristol, and the group is just starting to ramp up visibility, said Marketplace Manager Elizabeth Herendeen. Its purpose, she said, is to "ensure that Alaska remains the salmon state and remains home of the world's most sustainable wild salmon fisheries."
