These issues are to be found all over the world where fish stocks don’t respect territorial boundaries set by humans, but the north-eastern Atlantic has long been a melting pot of disputes over fishing rights, with highly migratory stocks and a group of fishing nations all within close range of each other.

 

In recent years there have been disputes over most pelagic stocks, as well as over some demersal fisheries, plus there is always wrangling between the nations within the European Union over how the shares should be divided and there are no one-size-fits-all solutions anywhere.
