A MAJOR feature of the two longliners is the 'moonpool' system for hauling the longlines. It is one of the latest developments in longlining and has been used successfully since 1999 aboard the 45m Norwegian longliner Geir.

A moonpool is a trunking system built into a longliner's hull which creates a level area of water using a valve system leading to a hauling platform. Its position just aft of midships and forward of the engineroom means water movement is less intense in the hauling area than is the case in the normal hauling position through a hatch in the vessel's side.
