GROUNDFISH catchers in New England are facing crippling cuts of up to 70% to their days at sea following a government scientific assessment that stock recovery targets are not being met.

FNI is told that the cuts are likely to be between 18 and 70%. For the majority of the fleet, which has been cut down to 48 days over years of regulation, even the lowest figure of 18% would make it next-to-impossible to run a business.
